Beautiful scenery, wild animals in their natural surroundings and a brother and sister learning quite a bit about life from a cheetah and a native Masai boy are the focal points of the 1989 Walt Disney family adventure, Cheetah.
Kenya's Rift Valley is the setting for this slow-moving "adventure," with ample shots of giraffe, rhino and elephants providing background. The teen siblings, Ted and Susan, are visiting the region on a six-month vacation while their father completes work at a local NASA tracking station. Their mother frets constantly about the kids wandering off into the harsh landscape, but kids will be kids, and before long, they've befriended a wise-beyond-his-years local boy, who gladly shows them around the neighborhood. They adopt an orphaned cheetah, but when the young cub grows up, an unscrupulous storekeeper and opportunistic Englishman make plans to kidnap the cheetah and use it to make money racing it against greyhounds.
Cheetah is adapted from Alan Caillou's novel, The Cheetahs.
