The successful space journey of Charlie the Chimp sets the stage for the first manned flight to orbit the moon in Disney's 1962 film, Moon Pilot. One of the film's most appealing features is the sophisticated live-action space segments, unusual for its' time.
Based on the 1960 novel Starfire, by Robert Buckner, Moon Pilot was a departure from the usual Disney production as it presented a satirical swipe at America's space program, government and military.
Astronaut Richmond Talbot is inadvertently selected to pilot the historic flight, but he immediately becomes a target of various government agencies, including a mysterious woman who may or may not be a spy.
Tom Tryon, Dany Saval, Brian Keith and Edmond O'Brien head the cast of Moon Pilot, which was a critical, if not commercial success. Director James Neilson made his Disney debut with Moon Pilot and went on to direct several more, including Summer Magic and The Moon Spinners.
