Walt Disney Productions Pete's Dragon is a live action-animated musical which is notable for being the first Disney film to utilize the Dolby stereo process.
Determined to escape his abusive adoptive parents, Pete (Sean Marshall) is about to be recaptured when he is rescued by an "unseen force" which turns out to be Elliott, a pink and green dragon which is invisible to all but Pete. Bonding quickly, the unlikely pair set off across coastal New England, encountering a multitude of odd characters along the way. Elliott has a propensity for practical jokes, and is also not the most graceful dragon, leading to several unintentional hilarious episodes for which Pete is inevitably blamed.
Rumors begin to circulate among townspeople about a possible "monster" along the local seashore after Elliott is accidentally spotted by others, and a manhunt ensues, forcing Pete to make every effort to save his friend from discovery.
Older viewers will recognize several familiar faces among the cast, including Mickey Rooney, Helen Reddy, Red Buttons, Shelley Winters and Jim Backus.
