Saving Mr. Banks
PG-13 | 125 min | Friday, December 13, 2013
Almost an "inside-the-making-of" film, the Walt Disney Pictures production of "Saving Mr. Banks" attempts to go back nearly half-a-century amidst the pre-production and subsequent making of the 1964 Disney classic "Mary Poppins." An impressive and distinguished cast is headed by Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, Colin Farrell and Paul Giamatti.
The film centers on "Mary Poppins" author P.L. Travers (Thompson), an Australian who reluctantly travels to California for the negotiations (with Walt Disney) and subsequent filming of her work. The sometimes contentious round of negotiations causes her to recall her fractured and often difficult relationship with her father, the "Mr. Banks" of the film's title. The amazingly versatile Hanks, as the legendary Walt Disney, is suitably convincing in the role, while Ms. Thompson is, as always, the epitome of grace and professionalism.
John Lee Hancock, better known for the sports dramas "The Blind Side" and "The Rookie," directs from Kelly Marcel's screenplay.
