  • Movie Description

Based on the book "Mother Carey's Chickens" by Kate Douglas Wiggins, Disney's 1963 film Summer Magic, features Disney favorites Hayley Mills and Burl Ives in a story focused on a widow and her children moving into a country home in a small town in Maine. With assistance from the caretaker of the home, they manage to fix it up despite the opposition of the caretaker's wife.

When a pretentious cousin of the family shows up and steals away the affection of the new teacher, the eldest daughter Nancy (Mills), at first upset with her cousin's manipulations, soon meets up with a new suitor, who turns out to be the owner of the country home.

Summer Magic is beautifully filmed, and the soundtrack, courtesy of songwriter brothers Richard and Robert Sherman is remembered best for the song, "Ugly Bug Ball," performed by Ives.

Besides Mills and Ives, appearances by notables such as Dorothy McGuire, Una Merkel, James Stacy and Michael J. Pollard complete the cast.
