Teen Beach Movie
PG | 110 min | Friday, July 19, 2013
Paying tribute to the teen fun-and-sun heyday of the 1960s, the Disney Channel Original Movie "Teen Beach Movie" borrows liberally from those Annette Funicello/Frankie Avalon vehicles that celebrated more innocent times when the waves were high and the summer never ended. Current familiar teen stars such as Ross Lynch (Austin & Ally), Maia Mitchell (The Fosters) and Grace Phipps (The Vampire Diaries) head up the cast, while Jeffrey Hornaday (Geek Charming) directs.
Slavishly devoted to their favorite film, "Wet Side Story," high school friends wind up being magically transported into the mythical movie via an epic wave while surfing. All of the familiar elements are present; kooky nicknames, bikers vs. surfers, spontaneous musical numbers and even a "mad scientist" subplot involving weather manipulation.
All in all, "Teen Beach Movie" doesn't try to reinvent the wheel or impart any deep wisdom. It's 125 minutes of mindless summer fun that doesn't make the mistake of taking itself too seriously.
