Thirteenth Year, The

The Thirteenth Year is a Disney Channel Original Movie fantasy-comedy about a teenage boy who turns out to be half-human, half-merman, (or boy). This explains his extraordinary aquatic skill.
Abandoned aboard a boat at birth by his mermaid mother, Cody Griffin (Chez Starbuck) is adopted by the Griffin's, and grows up, apparently a "normal" teenager. Then, upon turning 13, Cody starts to notice strange occurrences happening to his body, including the ability to climb walls, generate electricity, swim extraordinarily fast, and communicate with fish. He and his parents try to conceal these newly-found abilities, but when he shatters the state record in a swim meet, suspicions arise.
Featuring impressive special effects and better-than-average acting, The Thirteenth Year resembles the similarly-themed Splash (1984) at times, but Thirteenth's subplots, revolving around adolescence and the sometimes awkwardness accompanying it, make this film more "family-friendly."
Disney veteran Duwayne Dunham, whose credits include Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, Halloweentown and Little Giants, directed.
