One of the most surprising (and successful) film franchises began with Walt Disney's Tron, a science-fiction fantasy which reportedly was first imagined by director Steven Lisberger due to his obsession with the early video game, Pong.
Jeff Bridges plays Kevin Flynn, a software engineer who finds himself caught up in a world of computer espionage which threatens to compromise both the Pentagon and the Kremlin. Through the use of experimental lasers, humans are transferred into computer mainframes, leading to an unseen "war" that Flynn discovers could lead to global domination by the "victors."
Tron attained milestones in both computer animation and in introducing software possibilities that had previously been unimaginable. Tron's soundtrack was also trend-setting, featuring electronic works by Wendy Carlos, one of the genre's pioneers. Tron also was awarded a belated Academy Award in 1997 for Technical Achievement.
Along with Bridges, cast members include Bruce Boxleitner, David Warner and Cindy Morgan.
