Movie Description

The second in the "Star Wars" franchise to be released but the fifth in chronology, "The Empire Strikes Back," despite a mixed initial reception, has become perhaps the most critically acclaimed of George Lucas' iconic "space operas." Although uncredited, Lucas played an instrumental role in the film's screenplay, besides penning the original story.

Darth Vader's brutal Galactic Empire is desperately searching for the leaders of the Rebel Alliance, specifically Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. Luke is captured but escapes and nearly freezes to death on an icy planet. The spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi makes an appearance before Luke and thus inspired, manages to survive with Solo's help.

"The Empire Strikes Back" is perhaps most notable for the revelation by Darth Vader that he is actually Luke's father, which sets up all manner of storylines for future (and prequel) episodes.

Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher star, Irvin Kershner directs and John Williams provides his always-inspiring and thrilling soundtrack.
